Roosevelt Corollary Political Cartoon

Analyze

This political cartoon is about the topic of the Roosevelt Corollary. I know this because Roosevelt is dressed as a police man standing over the Western hemisphere, he is also holding the "big stick" also known as The New Diplomacy. The cartoonist of this is for the Roosevelt Corollary. I know this because it shows Roosevelt as a powerful strong figure, it also seems as if the people around him are praising him in a way and going to him with their comments, questions, and concerns. Some might see this political cartoon in a negative way. I think this because they may see Roosevelt as swinging the stick and knocking people around with it, kind of like using his power to his advantage. In this political cartoon is see the techniques of labeling, exaggeration, and analogy being used. I see the labeling on the stick, and the papers in his hand. I see exaggeration in Roosevelt's size compared to all of the other men. I also see analogy in the people standing as the countries and territories in the Western hemisphere going to Roosevelt for help and protection. This cartoon makes me believe that Roosevelt was a strong and powerful figure, here to help the U.S. and the countries and territories surrounding us.

Roosevelt Corollary Political Cartoon

Analyze

This political cartoon is on the topic of the Roosevelt corollary. I know this because it shows Roosevelt on a platform that says Roosevelt Doctrine. The cartoonist was against the Roosevelt corollary. I know this because it shows Roosevelt as a big scary figure invading Panama with all of his weapons and tools. However, some may see this as a positive message towards the topic. I believe this because if some one was really for the idea they could see this as viewing Roosevelt as a powerful figure and not as an invading one. In this cartoon I see techniques such as labeling and a lot of exaggeration. I see labeling on the flag and land. However, I see a ton of exaggeration, in Roosevelt's size and the Panamanian man's size and also in the amount of weapons he is carrying. This supports my idea of the belief of invasion in the way the U.S. acted during this time period.

Spanish American War Political Cartoon

Analyze

This cartoon is on the topic of the Sapnish-American war.  I know this because of the war ships in the background and the Spain island.  In the cartoon it seems as if the soldier is jumping off of the Spain island to attack the ship in the background and is being stopped. This makes me believe the cartoonist was with the U.S in the war in stopping Spain. I think with the picture of the soldier being hit can make people with easy hearts turn against the U.S. For techniques in this cartoon I notice labeling and exaggeration. I see labeling in the islands representing the states. I also see exaggeration in the state's size and the man's size as well. I agree with the cartoonist in the sense that the U.S. had full power and control over the Spanish-American war and that it was right for us to win.

Open Door Policy Political Cartoon

Analyze

The cartoon is about the topic of the open door policy. The cartoonist is picturing uncle Sam as a mischievous figure in this cartoon. I know this because he looks like he has a very sly and suspicious smile. Others may see him as sneaky and have a negative view on this cartoon. I know this because I do see him has sly or sneaky in this cartoon, and it doesn't really picture him as happy or jolly at all. In this cartoon I see techniques such as labeling and symbolism used. I see the labeling on the key uncle Sam is holding and on the door to China. I also see the symbolism in the people symbolizing the other foreign countries, but I also see exaggeration in uncle Sam's size compared to the other men in the cartoon. Like the cartoonist, I see this picture as the U.S. being sly and sneaky in our ways of expanding our influence and power.

Purchase of Alaska

Analyze

This cartoon is about the topic of the purchase of Alaska. I know this because the hunk of ice is labeled Russian America, also known as Alaska. The cartoonist believed the purchase of Alaska was a mistake. I know this because the cartoon portrays Alaska as a hunk of ice and nothing more. Many people probably agreed, but some people could have been open-minded at the idea. In this cartoon I notice the techniques of labeling and symbolism. I see labeling in the ice chunk and the wagon carrying it, and I also see the labeled bag that the Russian man is carrying away. I see symbolism in the chunk of ice symbolizing Alaska as nothing of importance. I, unlike the cartoonist, would have been open-minded to the opportunities of purchasing Alaska.

Annexation of Hawaii Political Cartoon

Analyze

This cartoon is on the topic of the annexation of Hawaii. I know this because the caption says, "Uncle Sam in Hawaii". The cartoonist is in agreement with the annexation, and I know this because of how confident and powerful uncle Sam is shown on the see-saw. Others may think of this cartoon as against the issue. I know this because uncle Sam can be pictured as rude or forceful in the cartoon and the queen can be seen as frightened. In this cartoon I see the techniques of exaggeration and symbolism. I see exaggeration on uncle Sams power and weight and in the queen's size and power to resist uncle Sam. I see symbolism in the barrel of sugar cane being the see-saw, teetering between the two sides. I, unlike the cartoonist, did not agree with the annexation of Hawaii, because they could have settled the feud more peacefully.

Panama Canal Political Cartoon

Analyze

This cartoon is on the topic of the panama canal. I know this because on the ground beneath his feet it is labeled panama canal. The cartoonist is showing Roosevelt as a hardworking powerful man that will build this canal no matter who or what is standing in the way. I know this because the caption, "the man who can make dirt fly" says that he is hardworking, and he is also removing from his way the people trying to stop him. Others might see Roosevelt in this cartoon as over powerful or forceful. The techniques I see are labeling on the ground and on the shovel handle, and I see exaggeration in Roosevelt's size. I, like the cartoonist, believed Roosevelt was determined to build this canal and would not let anything stop him.

Panama Canal Political Cartoon

Analyze

The political cartoon is about the topic of the panama canal. I know this because on Roosevelt's bad it says, "millions for the canal". The cartoonists message is that Roosevelt is taking over Columbia. i know this because of how he is choking the Colombian man who is holding his guns. Some people might see this cartoon in a positive way, because of the way uncle Sam is in the back cheering for Roosevelt. I see the techniques of labeling on Roosevelt's bag and the mans jacket, and I also see exaggeration in Roosevelt's size and strength. I, like the cartoonist, believe that Roosevelt, at that time, was seen as a forceful and strong figure.
